The Details
How far in advance do I need to book?
It is always a good idea to meet (or contact) all potential suppliers as soon as you can, mainly to secure your preferred date. It does help if you have clear ideas of your wedding dress style, colours or themes and the venue for the ceremony/reception. Due to Cairns being in tropical North Queensland and the added complexity of flower availability (as we do not have the luxury of popping into the local flower markets daily) – it is a requirement that all weddings be booked at least a month in advance, as our suppliers/wholesalers of speciality flowers require the order be in 2-3 weeks in advance to secure availability.
While we will always endeavour to source what you are hoping for your, we will not be able to guarantee speciality flowers for weddings that are booked within a 3-week time frame of the ceremony date.
We completely understand that some weddings are spontaneous and surprise elopements happen, and we will of course be happy to advise what is seasonally available at short notice.
Are some flowers only available at certain times of the year?
Yes, there are many seasonal flowers, and a great percentage of Australia’s flowers are imported. These include popular varieties such as natives, proteas, Roses, Peonies, Lissianthus, Cymbidium/Phalaenopsis Orchids to name a few. Unfortunately, this can differ greatly from year to year, making it hard to guarantee specific flowers at certain times of the year.
Do surcharges apply to certain flowers?
Some flowers have a higher market price, such as Grandiflora Roses, Tulips, Peonies, Phalaenopsis Orchids and Cymbidium Orchids and therefore may incur a small surcharge.
Do I need a theme for a style for my wedding before we meet?
No, not at all. Our experienced florists will make the process extremely easy whether you know exactly what you want, or if you’d like some help with coming up with floral styling ideas, but as stated earlier, it is always helpful if you do have some inspo pics to start with.
Why do I need to have a consultation?
While not compulsory, an initial wedding consultation allows us to clearly interpret your dream wedding day and in turn provide a detailed and accurate quote for you. The process is completely individual, as each wedding we create is completely original.
Do I have to meet with you in person?
No. Our obligation-free consultations are a personal experience designed to ensure that we understand your floral vision. We highly recommend you make the time to meet with us in person if you can.
However, we have designed many weddings without meeting in person and are more than happy to discuss your flowers over the phone or via email. In this case, we recommend you send through images prior to our chat, of what you would like i.e. flowers and themes you’re imagining.
How do I organise my wedding flowers form overseas or interstate?
While this may seem a little harder, Cairns is a destination location, and many of our brides are living overseas or interstate during the planning process, so we are only too happy to chat via the phone or email.
Why Do Wedding flowers seem more expensive? Why is this so?
While a lot of people assume that wedding flowers are overpriced and highly profitable – this is certainly not the case. In fact, we always feel we don’t charge enough for the time involved and have to turn away general retail orders, so we can give your florals the attention it deserves.
Wedding flowers tend to be more expensive as more time is spent on them – from the numerous phone calls to suppliers/wholesalers securing specific varieties for the day (often having to have them freighted up separately to general stock), to the conditioning and care upon their arrival in store. There is also time spent liaising with our brides, the church and reception venues, and wedding planners. To ensure that the flowers are the very best quality, more are often purchased so we can choose the perfect blooms.
Do you offer hire items?
We only offer a limited selection – but we are more than happy to assist with referring you to local vendors who specialise in larger event set up that carry an extensive range of unique hire items. These include all the basics such as vase ware, unique decorative items/furniture to help you style your venue.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes. We have experience in successfully delivering weddings from Mission Beach to Port Douglas and surrounding areas.
Can you deliver my flowers on the day?
We are a ‘full-service’ florist. This means we can take care of every aspect of your flowers including set up, deliveries and transfers (enabling you to reuse the ceremony flowers at the reception, for example).
How much do wedding flowers cost?
Every wedding is different (and is treated that way!), therefore it is difficult to give a general costing, but as an approximate guide, bridal bouquets generally range from $150 to $350, bridesmaids’ bouquets from $120 to $180, corsages from $55 to $65, buttonholes from $25. Table centrepieces can range from small jars at $35 each to large elaborate pieces from $350, depending on flower varieties requested. Traveling costs will also be considered during the quoting process if required.
Do you have a pricing guide?
Please note that wedding flower prices can vary greatly depending on the flower types, quantity, density and sizes of your floral arrangements, time of year etc. The prices outlined below are to be used as an indicative starting point and not specifically relied upon for the final quoting purposes. The prices below may vary due to seasonal flower availability, where they have to be sourced from etc and excludes GST.

Is there a minimum budget for my wedding?
There is no minimum budget.
Is a deposit required?
A 20% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your wedding or event date. We limit the number of weddings and events we do per week to ensure that all of our floral orders have the attention they require, so they can be designed and delivered flawlessly on the day. However, we do welcome changes to your wedding floral order up to three weeks prior to the wedding date.
What payment methods do you accept?
Payment methods accepted include direct transfer, cash, credit card (including Amex), cheque or money order.
What is the delivery fee?
Delivery of wedding flowers to a single address is $50. Where flowers need to be delivered to multiple locations for multiple rooms at large hotel/reception venues – additional fees may apply.
Why do you charge a wedding/function setup fee?
As a commercial business we need to cover the cost of staff and associated expenses for the time it takes to setup weddings and functions. This can include travelling time to and from, and more often than not, delays incurred with venues (i.e. not providing access until after they have finished with previous service/functions)
This often creates time pressures, where there is a short turn around, therefore multiply staff are required to complete the setup in a timely and efficient manner.
Wedding/function Set Up
Due to the tight turnaround times and time constraints, we base our wedding setups on 2 people being on site for a minimum of 2 hours, charged at $85 per hour/per person $340.
If additional time is required due to venue not being ready or due to the size of setup – additional charges may apply.
Wedding/function pack down/bump out
Again, due to the tight turnaround times and time constraints, often between 10pm and midnight, we base our wedding pack downs on 2 people being on site at $85 per hour/per person, but staff will be paid for 3 hours.
If additional time is required due to the size of pack down – additional charges may apply.
Please note that pack downs usually occur late at night and it is a requirement to pay staff for a minimum of 3 hours.
Setup and pack-downs on Sunday or Public holidays will attract a 15% surcharge.

We will then go through and pick out which accessories best accompany your wedding flowers. Our flowers are flown in from the top flower growers and importers in Australia. Only the best blooms are selected to create your bouquets and wedding flowers. We stay up-to-date with new trends and can also design flowers taking inspiration from any photos you have collected. Please remember as with all natural products, flowers are seasonal and particular varieties may not be available at certain times of the year.
Delivery
Smithfield Florist delivers weddings all over Cairns, Northern Beaches, Port Douglas and the surrounding areas. Your flowers are delivered carefully nestled in a tissue lined box approximately two hours before your wedding ceremony, or at a designated time to suit all parties.
Ceremony & Reception Set-up
We offer a full set up of your wedding flowers and accessories to your selected venue/s. Smithfield Florist will also pack down at midnight or the next day so you don’t need to do a thing! Ceremony flowers can also be transported to your reception so they can be utilized twice.
Caring for your Flowers
Weddings in tropical North Queensland can sometimes be quite hot! It is important to take care of your flowers, especially the bridal bouquets as they will be out and about with you for the majority of the day. We suggest they are left in an air-conditioned room, in the box until you are ready to have your photographs taken.
It is important that if flowers are being placed into commercial refrigeration that they are covered to avoid flowers being subjected to extreme cold.
